I started sneezing the other day for no good reason. It got me to thinking, "What am I allergic to?" I'll start with loud music from someone else's car, "and then I said, and then she said" conversations, a sentence started with "don't you think" and certainly news interview panels where one person talks only until someone else finds something to disagree with, at which point they loudly horn in, joined by other voices, and absolutely no careful listening.
What other family allergies do we have?

talk radio. of any kind.
Also, business papers/documents/websites that promote the business itself with poor grammar.
Sage, you know what's worse than loud music from someone else's car? Loud music from someone else's car where the license plate isn't fastened down properly. You get that buzzing vibrating sound with the booming bass. Can't they hear it? Oh, wait, of course not. They're bloody deaf by now.
My big issue is disregard of the policies of polite society.
The loud music fits right in there. I know you like your music, but I don't. Why are you making me listen to it? Apparently they have no regard for everyone else's personal space.
Then there's things as simple as waiting your turn.
I was at the Ford dealer recently talking to a service manager. He got up to get me something and on the way back to his desk, right in front of me, some other guy button-holed him to talk about some problem with his car. It was almost 6:00, and the service manager told him he could leave it and they would fix it in the morning. But this guy just had to tell the whole story about how it had been in several times, and he wanted to drive to Atlanta in the morning, and what's your opinion about what the problem could be, and oh, that couldn't be it because they tried to fix it that way once... blah, blah, blah. Even though the service manager said several times "Just let me finish with this other customer..." this guy just wouldn't stop. He literally took about ten minutes to go on about his car, even though nothing could be done about it tonight. The service manager finally got him to agree to wait a few minutes while he finished with his other customer (me). The guy waited about a minute before disappearing.
"I'm sure we all agree that we ought to love one another, and I know there are people in the world who do not love their fellow human beings, and I hate people like that!" -- Tom Lehrer
Ok, one thing that will drive me up the wall is when I am in a quiet room with one other person. It so happens they are in the middle of chowing down on their sub sandwhich (or anything that requires alot of chewing). And there we both sit in complete silence besides the disgusting, squishy, slushing, slurping sounds that are coming from the food being processed inside their closed mouth. It makes my skin crawl!
Next, I'm in traffic and the lane to the right of me is merging into mine. Now there are ALWAYS those idiots that wait to the very last minute to try to merge, in a feeble attempt to get ahead of everyone else, like it's really going to make a difference on getting them to their destination faster. On top of that, their selfishness slows traffic down even more, restricting the efficiency of the merging lane!
Cody, there's one of those merges on my drive home from work. Sometimes as the traffic slows, someone in a big SUV will creep halfway into the right lane to block anyone who tries that maneuver. I applaud the sentiment, but I don't know if it's proper driving practice.
And then there are the people who drive in the passing lane, exactly matching the speed of the person to their right. Do they think they're blocking for some unseen halfback?
ok on the note of driving - I HATE it when people leave their blinkers on! I can never trust a blinking car - is it really going to turn? Or is it just going keep on going so we all have to guess when it might actually turn?
Ah yes, traffic. Neill hates it when someone enters the freeway going about 30 miles an hour, instead of getting up to speed as they approach. Another version of poor merging.
We have an ineresting one coming to Sonoma. There is a 2 lane highway each way which carries a lot of traffic to Vallejo. The turn off to Sonoma is from the left lane. At this point, through traffic to Vallejo narrows to one lane. As that lane is usually backed up during traffic hours, drivers will use the left lane as though they were going to turn off to Sonoma, then force their way into the right lane in front of the line of traffic. Would that be a merge of convenience?
I hate people who drive slow in the left lane and I really hate people who take a year to make a right hand turn. There happen to be a lot of these people in the town my college is in.
Another thing... teachers who go over in class for ten minutes then get mad at the class for packing up. I have one professor who does this all the time, causing me to be late to my next class almost every time.
People who don't know the difference between You're and Your, there, they're and their, etc.
Sidenote, I am one of those people who force others to listen to my music. I actually find it really relaxing to drive around with the windows open and the music up loud. Some people smoke to deal with stress, some people hit things, I drive. However, I never block the intersection or try to merge at the last minute, so it balances out. That is my defense.
Weak, AKulka.
Why not roll up the windows?
And by the way, Cody, you nearly ruined my lunch with your oh so graphic description of munching noise. Yuk!
Incompetancy in places of business. Par example: When I go to have my blood drawn, I expect that they take as much as they need, for I live 150 miles away and cannot return to supply more. Also, phlebotomists who tie you off like they've had a lifetime of experience doing it with a belt, yet still can't seem to find a vein.
Men who take forever to get somewhere: If there is still hair on your face, it couldn't have taken you that long to get ready.
Parents who refuse to discipline their children.
Journalists. Honestly, journalism is a lost art. When I turn on the NETWORK news, I expect to see fact, not a personality/personal opinion/puff piece. Leave that to the Bill O'Reillys and Anderson Coopers of the world. See also: "Spin"
Hipsters.
Rich kids.
Oprah. I was distracted from your lament on the plight of the Africans, for the flash of your enormous bling.
Merging at the last minute is a big deal for me. I don't like anyone who does that unless they make a mistake and roll their window down to ask me first. One time I almost hit a car because I didn't let him/her merge in. Anyway, I love the rule of taking a queue in this country.
I agree with many of you about the grammar part. I think if anyone wants to live here and do business here, they should respect their language and be professional. For every business email or letter I write, they need to be approved by David before they can be send out. I am trying very hard about this grammar.
Thanks for mom (Valda) who helps me to teach and check my grammar for my personal writing. Nevertheless, to master in a language is very very difficult.
Stinky homeless,
I cannot even begin to tell you how much I agree with your statement -
"I think if anyone wants to live here and do business here, they should respect their language and be professional." I do not understand why - in MY own country!! - I have to learn another language just to be able to order maxican food, have my car washed, or my house cleaned. I understand that English is a difficult language to learn, and I respect those who are doing their best to learn it. However. I do not have any respect for those who move here (legally or otherwise...) and then treat me as if I am the bad guy because I only speak English. I get so frustrated because when I lived in Rome, I had to learn enough Italian to get by. Seems to me, the rules should apply here as well.
