The Train of Pain

Hey family!

As most of you know, I am embarking on a 500 mile bike trip from San Francisco to Los Angeles May 19th. I'm so excited and I have been training vigorously. Last Saturday I did a 60 mile ride and the Saturday before I completed a brutal 71 mile trek through the outskirts of Alpine Valley. I wanted to share with you all the logo I created for the trip though. We're putting it on t-shirts and all that jazz. Right now there are 15 other riders on the roster. Carter, the guy responsible for putting the trip together, appropriately named our insane journey "The Train of Pain". He also commissioned me to do the logo. So here she is!

Hey, Cody, nice work! I like the way you used parts of a bicycle in the logo, and put the "center circle" lower. The main thing is that the logo lindicates strength to me - which you will all need plenty of.

Nice design. I really love the name.

Very nice. The off-center inner circle brings cues of an old steam engine wheel. Ties right in with Train of Pain. I like it. You do this for a living?

By the way, share with us some more details of your ride. How many days will you be on the road? Is someone planning a careful route on secondary roads, or are you going to brave the traffic of Highway 1 all the way down the coast? Details man, details!

Thank you everyone for the great compliments. It's always interesting to me as a designer to hear different peoples' take on my work. One of my #1 rules is form follows function. And as you stated, the logo reflects strength and power. It makes me smile when what I was trying to communicate is successful. Uncle Matt - your comment on it reminding you of a steam engine - brilliant! I never thought of that! Very cool. And to answer your question - I indeed do this for a living. Anyways, enough gab on that.

As far as details for the trip, yes we have an exact route - turn by turn that we will be following. It will take us a total of five days. The most brutal one will be the third day, where we will brave 115 miles of tear jerking hills. That day we will climb a total of 28,000 ft! Up down, up, down, up, down. And yes, highway 1 will carry us for the majority of the journey!
