For those of you who does not read well in Czech yet, here is a translation;-)
Hello everybody. First of all, I would like to thank you all ( I do not know, who was the first :-) for having idea to invite also Czech Kulkas to your family blog. Invitation that could not be refused. In spite of my limitation on expressing whatever I have in my mind due to my language limits, I will try to stay in contact with you and time after time to contribute with some news from far country.
For all of you who do not know me yet, let me introduce myself shortly. I am a younger son of Hanus and Hana Kulka from Prague. My father Hanus and Felix Kulka were cousins (nephewes?) (I hope I did not make a mistake:-).
I am married with Misa and I have two sons - Ondrej (just 16) and Matej (7). For those, who would like to see some pictures, look link stated above. Yes, it is not too up to date, but I promise, I will update it soon. On those pages there is also a link to the older pages, where you can see a little of history.
I think that it is enough for now. Once more best regards to all of you and "read you soon".
Vit

Hello Vit!! I am so happy to hear from you! I cannot believe that Ondrej is already 16 and Matej is 7! Is Ondrej taller than you yet? Thanks for the translation to english, as much as I would like to think I could read Czech, I think that there are only two words I really know - juisbus autobus!

(When I was in the Czech Republic in 2003 those were the words Matej kept repeating...I finally asked Vit and he told me that the words don't actually mean anything, but like any young kid, he just liked to hear himself talk!)

Vit, thank you so much for joining us. And thank you for translating your greeting into English. Since my family has not met yours, I appreciate your helping us understand the family relationship.

I spent some time looking at the pictures in your albums. It is interesting to see that all Kulka children are handsome, all over the world. I enjoyed your pictures of nature and the zoo as well. The zebra and the small creature sitting on its hind legs on the rock were favorites. (Dovolena 05 "dov_05 035" Is that a Prairie dog? A Meerkat?)

I notice you're in many of the pictures. Does that mean Misa is the fine photographer or do you share the camera equally?

If you have time to share news from your side of the world, it would be very interesting to read.

Best Wishes,
Matt Kulka

Hi Vit and everybody. Yes, it's fun to be able to enjoy this cross-planet Kulka interchange

However, we will be able to communicate more directly soon -- Cholada and I expect to be in Prague this May.

I'm very excited about seeing that city again, visiting the "real" Kulkas again, and re-experiencing the Czech Republic with my wife Cholada. I'm sure the city has changed tremendously since I saw it in 1992. I wonder whether the cafe where I used to order goulash is still standing, and whether I'll be able to find it. Do they still sell Russian submariner watches down by the river? Mine never kept proper time. No wonder the Russian submarine fleet was so unsuccessful.

My first memory of Prague was stepping off the train, and seeing Vit. Somehow I instantly knew he was a Kulka. Those days were great fun,, and a door into the Kulka history. See you soon!

Ahoj Vit
Thanks for link. It's funny how much your Kulkas look like our Kulkas. They must be some pretty strong genes.
I love Matejs little bow-tie. Had I the luck of being born a little Czech boy, I think I would wear one everyday. At least until I was twelve.
So Hanus and Felix's fathers were brothers, is that correct?

And I'll bite (sorry), why are there fish in the tub?

Uncle Matt, I would like to point out I never had a birthday cake with bears and planes (and gummi bears!). I'm just sayin'.

Uncle David said "My first memory of Prague was stepping off the train, and seeing Vit. Somehow I instantly knew he was a Kulka."

I literally had the exact same first memory of Prague. I was so happy to see him I almost cried - I had just spent 24 hours traveling by train by myself from Rome. I saw Vit - and Lo and Behold - He looks just like the Kulkas I already know and love! Must be that bumper my dad always jokes about...(forehead)

Vit,

Welcome to the Kulka blog. I am glad that you join us. Like David said, David and I will see you and your family soon. It must be pretty cold down there. In Ca, the weather is predictable, never too cold, never too hot, and always in the middle. I came from Asia (Thailand). I don't know much about Europe. As I have expected, your country must have a lot of cheeses and Czechs. Anyway, see you and your family there. Bye.

It is weekend and I have found a little bit more time to reply to your invitation messages.
EESmall: No. Ondra is not taller than me but only than Misa. Concerning "juisbus autobus" - origin of this saying is the German word "tschuss" which means "bye". In Czech language there is a lot of words which originate in German because of partially common history. But phrase "tschus bus autobus" really means nothing and Matej was using it only as a funny ding dong/crank(?)
western sage: Thanks for explaining me family "who is who". Concerning Czech words - I am sorry but I must disappoint you - tag is not Czech word ;-) but German and means "day". You are right with "vodopad" - it means "waterfall". But do not be afraid, I will write my posts and comments in English (or something like this - sorry for possibly mistakes), so Czech will not be needed. My introductory Czech post was only a try to be intersting :-)
Uncle Matt: You are right - the small creature is a Meerkat - we call it Surikata. We share the camera but not equally - Misa use it more often. I use video cam so I have many hours of vids but which I mostly have not time to finalize into the viewable video.
David: Hi David, great news that you expect to come to Prague. Let me know as soon as you will know more. It will be my pleasure to help you with anything and I am looking forward to welcome you and Cholada here.
Sasha: I have checked my "family tree position" with my dad once more and I have to make a small correction - Felix and my grandpa(!) were cousins - their fathers were brothers.
Why we have fish in our tube? Because aquarium was too small for so big ones :-) Just kidding - we have no aquarium. It was a Christmas time and it is a Czech custom to have a fish for a Christmas Eve dinner. A few days before a Christmas Eve, there appears a lot of stands with a big vats with carps everywhere on the streets. It is funny that we do not like carp so we only buy carp, Matej enjoys it for a few days and finally we give it to my parents.
Regarding a birthday cake - Misa made it herself. Maybe someday I will collect pictures of them and show you, because Misa is very creative.
EESmall: You did not say whole story about your arrival to Prague. I had an information that your train will come from Wiena to the Prague Main station. It looked so easy - I will come on the platform and pick you up the same way as David a few years ago. But when I came to the Main station I was told that there is no train coming from Wiena to the Main station, but that there is a train that just arrived to the other Prague train station. What now? I decided to go to that station and try to find you (regardless I did not know how). Fortunately, when we communicated by email before you come, I sent you my mobile phone number. So when I was unsuccessfully finding you on the other train station, you called me, that you are on the Main station, because you went there yourself by subway (naturally - you promised it:-). So I went back to the Main station where we finally met.
What means "bumper"? When trying to find the meaning of this word on the Net i have found this: http://www.bumperdumper.com/bumper2.htm :-))) I would prefer another meaning, please :-)
Stinky Homeless: Great translation! Did you translate it yourself or did you use any translator? Yes, it is not 100% correct, but some sentences are understandable. I know, Czech is difficult language. The most surprisingly - diacritic marks are correct. Often it is a big problem to display correctly those marks.
Thats all for now. Bye all.

I must be spelling "tag" wrong. It is something that Felix's sister Licy often throws in as an exclamation. Tak, maybe?
I learned vodypad because we had a book of photos from Czechoslovakia, and each time there was a waterfall, the word vodypad appeared in the caption below.

Yes Vit - you are correct - our first meeting was quite eventful. I remember I had no idea that there were two stations in Prague, so I had told you that I would be at the main one. Later, actually while on the train, I learned that I would be coming into the other train station. So, I got off somewhere (no idea where!!) and took a subway to the station I had said I would be at. There I was, all alone, scared out of my mind, and I was looking to find someone I had never met! I was close to tears I was so scared, when finally we spoke on the mobile phone and somehow you figured out where I was. I was so very very relieved when you came and found me!!

In this case, bumper refers to the forehead. All the Kulka men I know have distinctive foreheads - my dad calls them bumpers because they stick out a little bit like the bumpers of a car! A little joke.

Uncle Matt said...

EESmall, it's funny your dad has a special name for the special Kulka forehead, because we have a similar saying in our family. I have that forehead, and have passed it on to Stacy and Ashley (fortunately, not to the degree that I have it). In our house we call it the "'49 Merc forehead." A 1949 Mercury is a classic car with a big hood which is especially tall in front.

Here's a picture:
